“The reason why most people can’t think outside the box is that their box is their comfort zone.”

Lee Thayer

In my early years in business, nearly everything I touched turned to gold. I was also pretty arrogant, to say the least. In fact, I was very arrogant. My life was very comfortable, and I didn’t think I had much more to learn. I ran for mayor in my town and believed I could run for governor after that.

I took my accumulated treasure and invested it in a business that I knew little about. I was truly living large in my comfort zone.

Well, I lost the mayor’s race, my marriage failed, and the business I had invested in went bankrupt. Then so did I – personal bankruptcy. My comfort zone was now truly shattered.

What I discovered is we learn little to nothing while living in our comfort zone. True knowledge comes from the change we go through on the downside of life’s issues.

Getting out of our comfort zone is equal to changing a habit in our lives. A few weeks ago, we changed to daylight saving time. I like DST but hate the mental transition. I have adjusted to it, but I detested the change.

It is very important, whether in our personal or business life, to have open conversations about learning how to get out of your comfort zone and accept the change process.

Remember – You won’t grow while in your comfort zone. I am still learning this!!

Onward!
